Economic Stimulus Poll Finds 76% of Healthcare Executives Don’t Feel “Meaningful Use” is attainable by 2011

WEYMOUTH, MA – April 13, 2009 –The results from the Beacon Partners Economic Stimulus Poll, surveying those attending the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) event in Chicago April 4-8th, found that 76% of healthcare executives don’t feel that most healthcare organizations will be able to implement and become “meaningful users” of certified EHR systems by 2011 in time to qualify for the incentives.

“Healthcare organizations are still trying to sort out the definition of meaningful use, and this poll reveals that as more details are brought forth, industry insiders don’t believe they will be able to attain such status,” says Ralph P. Fargnoli, Jr., president and CEO of Beacon Partners, Inc. “It’s a real, viable concern and one that CIOs are starting to lose sleep over.

” The Beacon Partners Economic Stimulus Poll, which ran all four days during HIMSS, also uncovered the following findings from the healthcare executives surveyed:

  • 61% don’t feel that $20B from the economic stimulus package that is dedicated to healthcare IT is enough
  • 68% don’t feel that distributing the funds via Medicare Reimbursements is the best way to incent IT adoption
  • 55% do feel that the funding of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONCHIT) will finally drive vendors into an era of cooperation toward interoperable solutions for EHR
  • 76% do believe that the entire stimulus package will have a positive impact on the U.S. economy.

“It’s interesting to me that while the majority taking the poll feel that funds will not be enough in the long run or that Medicare reimbursements are the best way to distribute the funds, they DO feel that the entire package will have a positive impact,” continues Fargnoli. “It’s an indication that we are moving in the right direction, but there is still a lot of work that will need to be done even after all the funds are distributed.”

“CIOs need a lot of support and direction in order to make this work, and the biggest mistake they can make is to delay in getting this process started, the time to act is now,” concludes Fargnoli.
